Mistral raises €3 billion to build a full AI stack
Mistral announced a €3 billion Series D round at a post-money valuation above €21 billion. Samsung Electronics led the financing, with Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity as co-leads. Mistral called it the largest equity fundraising round completed by a European technology company.
The company said it will use the capital to expand frontier research, training compute, infrastructure and international commercial operations. Mistral now works across 20 countries and says more than 125 large enterprises use its technology for mission-critical AI projects. The round strengthens its pitch that customers should be able to combine open-weight models with private, controllable infrastructure instead of depending on one vendor's hosted stack.
China sets a 9,800-EFLOPS compute target for 2030
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a five-year information and communications plan that targets 9,800 EFLOPS of intelligent computing capacity by 2030. The plan also calls for 3.8 trillion yuan in cumulative information-infrastructure investment and 4.1 trillion yuan in annual industry revenue by the end of the period.
The target turns compute capacity into an explicit national industrial objective. It links AI development to data centers, communications networks, security and domestic supply chains rather than treating model research as a separate sector. The practical questions will be how efficiently that capacity is used, which accelerators supply it, and whether power and networking can expand at the same pace.
Researchers demonstrate an AI-built zero-click WeChat worm
The New York Times reported that researchers at security company Calif built a zero-click worm targeting WeChat in a little more than a week with help from advanced AI models. The tool could compromise accounts and spread across iOS and Android devices without requiring a user to click a malicious link. Tencent said it fixed the underlying vulnerability.
The demonstration is a warning about the speed of offensive development, not evidence that AI can independently defeat every platform. Small teams can now test ideas, generate code and connect exploit components much faster. That compresses the period between discovering a weakness and weaponizing it, increasing the value of rapid disclosure, secure defaults and automated defensive testing.
ASML and TSMC plan larger masks for future AI chips
ASML and TSMC formed an industry initiative to move High NA EUV lithography toward 12-inch photomasks. The partners target a pilot line by 2031 and production-ready lithography systems by 2033. TSMC intends to begin using High NA technology for advanced-node manufacturing in 2030, initially with today's 6-inch masks.
Larger masks are intended to improve scanner productivity, lower manufacturing costs and reduce stitching constraints as chip designs become more complex. The timeline is long, but that is the point: the AI hardware roadmap depends on coordinated investments years before capacity reaches fabs. Standards agreed now can determine the economics of accelerators built in the next decade.
DeepSeek hires to reinforce strained back-end systems
South China Morning Post reported that DeepSeek is seeking about 150 senior back-end engineers after rapid growth in users, data, machines and training workloads pushed its existing systems toward their limits. Harness team leader Cui Tianyi said the infrastructure needs extensive upgrades, maintenance and rewriting to support new requirements.
The hiring push shows that model quality is only one part of an AI service. Agents create longer sessions, more tool calls and less predictable traffic than basic chat, so reliability engineering becomes a product constraint. DeepSeek's challenge is to preserve the cost and access advantages associated with its open-weight models while operating a platform at much larger scale.
Patagonia attracts early data-center plans
Reuters reported growing investor interest in Argentina's Patagonia region for large data centers, citing cool temperatures, renewable power, shale gas and available land. Pampa Energia has agreed to provide 30 megawatts for the first stage of a project in the Bahia Blanca free-trade zone, where an IT park is under construction.
The region illustrates how AI infrastructure is searching for new geographies as established markets face power constraints and community opposition. Attractive climate and energy resources are not enough on their own. Developers also need transmission, fiber, political stability and credible water planning.
